5 Basic Cooking Skills to Learn Before Starting Uni

If you’re heading to uni for the first time this September, you’re going to need to brush up on your cooking skills. It’s always best to start with the basics, so here’s really simple tutorials to get you started:

How to Cook Pasta

Get a large pan with a lid and fill it with lots of water. Add a pinch of salt and put it on a high heat with the lid on. Only add the pasta once the water is fully boiling and follow the timings on the packet.

How to Use a Knife

Make sure your knife is sharp and always use a chopping board. Hold the food firmly when chopping and keep your fingers tucked right back.

How to Boil an Egg

Half fill a pan with water and put it on the heat to boil. Turn it down to a simmer, add the eggs and put the lid on the pan. Use a timer and take the eggs out after 5 minutes for a runny yolk or 6 minutes for a harder yolk. Grab some toastie soldiers and dig in! If you don't have egg cups, you can use the egg box instead.

How to Cook Rice

Follow this simple method for cooking white basmati rice - 1/2 mug of rice, cooked with 1 mug of water. You can use this same ratio for cooking different amounts too. Boil for 10 minutes or until all the water has been absorbed. Grab a fork and use it to fluff up the rice before serving
